And if you’ve got plenty of cash to throw around on your next visit to the city, consider taking a US Helicopters flight from JFK to Manhattan. gets you there in 8 minutes but costs about $160 each way.

New York Minute #64

This is as close as we’ll get to a New York City Marathon special this year on the show. Not bad though. In association with my friend Jerry Cahill, host of the Cystic Fibrosis Podcast, I covered the Team Boomer post marathon fund raiser.

The event was held at a very nice Irish Pub called Mr. Dennehy’s. The pub is located at 63 Carmine St. near 7th Avenue South.

And yes I did interview one actual runner in the marathon. I also talk with Jerry about Team Boomer and mix with some locals who talk about their experiences around town.

I think I’m becoming addicted to soundseeing tours. What can I say? I love getting out amongst the good people of the New York area.

This episode has me hanging with my pal Brother Love at Liberty Jam 2006. This was an all day concert event to raise money for and awareness about Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. Liberty State Park is just a stones throw from Lower Manhattan and is very close to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

The event featured a fun day of eclectic music including The Smithereens, Los Lobos, Patti Smith, George Clinton and headliners Cheap Trick.

A soundseeing tour of the Hoboken, NJ Waterfront this week on the show. Hoboken, nicknamed the Mile Square City, is the birthplace of Frank Sinatra and sits directly across from Greenwich Village and Chelsea on the Hudson River.

The PATH trains provide easy access to Hoboken from Manhattan. Once in Hoboken you can enjoy a park directly on the Hudson River with views of the river from New York Harbor up to the George Washington Bridge. You can follow a path north along the river to the Frank Sinatra Cafe and a skate park at the north end of the path which is about a mile from the train station.

I also talk about a couple of options for summer movies outdoors in New York City. On Monday nights in the summer you can enjoy free movies in Bryant Park at Sunset. You can also see indie films on rooftops courtesy of Rooftop Films.

Samantha is an independent musician who recently stopped in New York and played a great set at Rockwood Music Hall where I had the please to catch here live. Samantha lived in the city a few years back and she was kind enough to chat about her recent visit and past experiences while here. We open the show with her song, Christoper Street which is about a very popular street in the West Village. This track evokes memories of a celebrity encounter I had on the corner of Christopher and Hudson Streets. And we close the show with a song by Samantha called Silent & Still. Both tracks are off of her very excellent album, Somewhere Between Starving and Stardom.

NYC Transit Strike Info and Links

For those of you who don’t know, transit workers (i.e. city bus and subway workers) have gone on strike as of 3AM this morning. This means that people are either walking, driving themselves or taking cabs to get where they’re going. Generally, it’s a huge inconvenience for everyone, especially because it’s Christmas shopping season and it’s very cold outside. Lot of folks are mad but they’re getting where they’re going. That’s right, New Yorkers may be mad but they’re moving which doesn’t surprise me. The people affected most are those in the boroughs outside Manhattan where there are fewer available cabs for those without their own vehicle. Of course, driving in Manhattan is as bad as ever. There are a wide variety of rules and restrictions for cabs and drivers that relate to this strike. It;s very confusing so I though that I would provide some links to resources that will help folks out:

For Drivers - Must have four people in your vehicle below 96th Street between 5AM and 11AM, Monday thru Friday. These restrictions also apply on bridges and tunnels leading to and from Manhattan. Word is that these rules are being strictly enforced.
For Taxi Cabs - Taxis will be required to pick up multiple passengers. Passengers will pay a special strike fare that is different from normal fares. These fares are based on zones (zone map) designated by the City. Basically, a one zone trip will cost you $10 with $5 for each extra zone that you enter. No, you don’t split your fare with other occupants of the cab. Everybody pays separately. Trips to and from the airport at set at $20 from LaGuardia Airport and $30 from JFK airport. The multiple passenger rules apply to/from the airport as well so get ready to be crammed in.
For Walkers and Cyclists - The rules are…there ain’t no rules! You rule the roost during these troubled times. Click here for a map of the points where you can walk/cycle into the city. Get a cycling map here. Also, there’s additional bike storage available at the following parks: Washington Square Park, Tompkins Square Park, Union Square Park, Madison Square Park, Bryant Park.

As promised last week, here’s the last show of 2005. It’s a soundseeing tour of an interactive Off Broadway show called Tony and Tina’s Wedding. Tony and Tina’s Wedding is one of the longest running shows in the city and it’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced at the theatre. Join a real cast of Italian-American characters as they celebrate the wedding of Tony and Tina. The show includes a ceremony and reception with a buffet meal, champagne and wedding cake. There’s a live band an everyone is invited to join in the fun on the dance floor. You’ll laugh, you’ll dance and you don’t have to bring a gift. Listen in on the event as we bring you interviews with the cast, er…members of the wedding party, candid quotes from audience members and lots of audio of the festivities at the catering hall located in the Edison Hotel on West 46th Street in the theatre district of Manhattan.
