We had a very nice time while there. I hadn’t been down there in years so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The main attractions include the beach, the New York Aquarium, the rides, and the activity on the boardwalk. There is a new kids amusement park called Luna Park that offers modern rides for kids of all ages. At the new Luna Park they have more modern ticketing technology. You purchase a card with credits on it that is scanned at the ride. One thing that they did at Luna Park and the at Wonder Wheel Park that I liked was that they let parents ride with small children without charging for the parents.

For food and drink we consumed the standard greasy (but fun) boardwalk food including pizza, fried shrimp and onion rings. You can get seafood and a beer at places like Ruby’s and Cha Cha’s. The kids had some cotton candy. Sadly there was no one actually making cotton candy so all of the vendors were selling cotton candy in pre-made bags. You can’t win ‘em all! There are other newer attractions in the area especially the Mets baseball minor league affiliate the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Cyclones play at a stadium that is right next to the boardwalk.

Unfortunately some of the places I have mentioned may not be around next year. Recent stories have indicated that the new owners of the boardwalk buildings may not renew certain leases. The new businesses might be more family friendly and help to improve the overall image of the area. While that would be a good thing, folks nostalgic for old New York are certain to be disappointed.

Coney Island is accessible via car by taking the Brooklyn Queens Expressway to the Belt Parkway East if you are coming from north or west of Coney Island. Beware of afternoon and weekend traffic in both directions! You can take public transportation as well. The D, N, F and Q subway lines go to the Stillwell Avenue station in Coney Island which is very close to the boardwalk.

A little bit of both of those can be seen in the video along with the Hall of Ocean Life. It’s a highly recommended destination for the family when you are in New York City. There is parking right beneath the building (unfortunately it’s expensive) but if you don’t need to drive the museum is convenient to public transportation including the A subway line which stops at 81st Street.

This video was actually shot in 2004. I have shown a small clip of it previously but now technology has allowed me to pull the full seven minutes together into a reasonably sized file.

What you are looking at is the Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th, 2004. This video was shot from a bridge in Greenpoint, Brooklyn looking out towards the East River. I love the fact that you can hear all the explosions. Enjoy!

I believe it because I was on the streets and it felt like spring.

Strolling through Bryant Park I found out that the Wi-Fi access was down and the free ice skating rink was turning into a lake. Over in Times Square the post-matinée crowd was filling the streets and enjoying the respite from winter.

Lucky for you I had my new Samsung BlackJack with me to help record the events of the afternoon. The resulting video podcast is a bit low-fi, but the scene comes across real good.

And yes I did interview one actual runner in the marathon. I also talk with Jerry about Team Boomer and mix with some locals who talk about their experiences around town.

A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints is a book written by Dito Montiel that has been made into a movie based on Dito’s screenplay.

    The movie chronicles Dito’s rough upbringing in Astoria, Queens from the perspective of an older Dito (played by Robert Downey Jr.) remembering his past while returning to visit his sick father years later.

    The film won some major awards at the 2006 Sundance film festival and has a classic New York cast that includes Rosario Dawson, Chazz Palminteri and Diane Wiest along with younger stars Shia LaBeouf and Channing Tatum. The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 29th.

Hoboken, nicknamed the Mile Square City, is the birthplace of Frank Sinatra and sits directly across from Greenwich Village and Chelsea on the Hudson River.

    The PATH trains provide easy access to Hoboken from Manhattan. Once in Hoboken you can enjoy a park directly on the Hudson River with views of the river from New York Harbor up to the George Washington Bridge. You can follow a path north along the river to the Frank Sinatra Cafe and a skate park at the north end of the path which is about a mile from the train station.

    I also talk about a couple of options for summer movies outdoors in New York City. On Monday nights in the summer you can enjoy free movies in Bryant Park at Sunset. You can also see indie films on rooftops courtesy of Rooftop Films.

    Our featured content in this episode is an interview with Samantha Murphy. Samantha is an independent musician who recently stopped in New York and played a great set at Rockwood Music Hall where I had the please to catch here live. Samantha lived in the city a few years back and she was kind enough to chat about her recent visit and past experiences while here. We open the show with her song, Christoper Street which is about a very popular street in the West Village. This track evokes memories of a celebrity encounter I had on the corner of Christopher and Hudson Streets. And we close the show with a song by Samantha called Silent & Still. Both tracks are off of her very excellent album, Somewhere Between Starving and Stardom.

    For those of you who don’t know, transit workers (i.e. city bus and subway workers) have gone on strike as of 3AM this morning. This means that people are either walking, driving themselves or taking cabs to get where they’re going. Generally, it’s a huge inconvenience for everyone, especially because it’s Christmas shopping season and it’s very cold outside. Lot of folks are mad but they’re getting where they’re going. That’s right, New Yorkers may be mad but they’re moving which doesn’t surprise me. The people affected most are those in the boroughs outside Manhattan where there are fewer available cabs for those without their own vehicle. Of course, driving in Manhattan is as bad as ever. There are a wide variety of rules and restrictions for cabs and drivers that relate to this strike. It;s very confusing so I though that I would provide some links to resources that will help folks out:

    WEBSITES

    • Strike Contingency Plan Website – The city’s official website for the strike contingency plan. Lots of info, maybe too much on all aspects of the contingency plan.
    • HopStop New York – Hoofing (or cycling) it? Check out this website for point to point directions between addresses or major city sites.
    • 1010 WINS – Official website for New York’s most popular local AM Radio news station. They’ve got updates on the negotiations, the status of the strike and opinions from angry commuters. You can also listen online to get the latest.

    KEY RULES

    • For Drivers – Must have four people in your vehicle below 96th Street between 5AM and 11AM, Monday thru Friday. These restrictions also apply on bridges and tunnels leading to and from Manhattan. Word is that these rules are being strictly enforced.
    • For Taxi Cabs – Taxis will be required to pick up multiple passengers. Passengers will pay a special strike fare that is different from normal fares. These fares are based on zones (zone map) designated by the City. Basically, a one zone trip will cost you $10 with $5 for each extra zone that you enter. No, you don’t split your fare with other occupants of the cab. Everybody pays separately. Trips to and from the airport at set at $20 from LaGuardia Airport and $30 from JFK airport. The multiple passenger rules apply to/from the airport as well so get ready to be crammed in.
    • For Walkers and Cyclists – The rules are…there ain’t no rules! You rule the roost during these troubled times. Click here for a map of the points where you can walk/cycle into the city. Get a cycling map here. Also, there’s additional bike storage available at the following parks: Washington Square Park, Tompkins Square Park, Union Square Park, Madison Square Park, Bryant Park.
