Spend a few minutes with the sea lions at the Central Park Zoo. They have twice-a-day feedings at the pool in the middle of the zoo. The crowds can get large, especially in the summer when the weather is warm and the kids are off from school.

This video was actually shot in 2004. I have shown a small clip of it previously but now technology has allowed me to pull the full seven minutes together into a reasonably sized file.

What you are looking at is the Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th, 2004. This video was shot from a bridge in Greenpoint, Brooklyn looking out towards the East River. I love the fact that you can hear all the explosions. Enjoy!

A quick stop at the main branch of the post office on 33d St. and 8th Avenue. The building is open 24 Hours A Day serving the postal needs of New Yorkers. The structure is magnificent but currently covered in scaffolding. Madison Square Garden and Pennsylvania Station are right across the street.

Video - Warm Winter Day

People are saying that the temperature peaked over 70 degrees (about 20 celsius) here in New York City today. I believe it because I was on the streets and it felt like spring.

Strolling through Bryant Park I found out that the Wi-Fi access was down and the free ice skating rink was turning into a lake. Over in Times Square the post-matinée crowd was filling the streets and enjoying the respite from winter.

Lucky for you I had my new Samsung BlackJack with me to help record the events of the afternoon. The resulting video podcast is a bit low-fi, but the scene comes across real good.

Video - Walking Fifth Avenue Part Two

This is part two of the Fifth Avenue walking tour video. The first part of the tour was published in October and featured a walk from 34th St. to 51st. with lots of great sights along the way.

Part two includes the walk from 51st to 59th Streets and includes sights such as Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Cartier, Trump Tower and The Apple Store.

Background music comes courtesy of Australian singer/songwriter Bianca Jade.

Part one of a two part video walking tour of Fifth Avenue from 34th St. to 51st St. in New York City. You’ll see such sights as The Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral among others. Music by Slau.

The download version features a trailer for A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints at the end of the video. I mentioned this movie in an earlier post. It is written and directed by Dito Montiel who tells the true story of his life growing up in Astoria, NYC.

Video - A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints

Not a podcast, but worth showing here because this is a classic New York story. A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints is a book written by Dito Montiel that has been made into a movie based on Dito’s screenplay.

The movie chronicles Dito’s rough upbringing in Astoria, Queens from the perspective of an older Dito (played by Robert Downey Jr.) remembering his past while returning to visit his sick father years later.

The film won some major awards at the 2006 Sundance film festival and has a classic New York cast that includes Rosario Dawson, Chazz Palminteri and Diane Wiest along with younger stars Shia LaBeouf and Channing Tatum. The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 29th.

Video - Liberty Jam 2006

As promised a couple of weeks back on the accompanying soundseeing audio podcast, we have some cool video of Liberty Jam 2006.

The jam was held at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ on June 25th. This is the first year of what we hope will be an annual event produced by the local Liberty Event Management.

Check out the video to get an idea of where the park is in relation to downtown Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Hint, it’s real close to all three!

Check out the great music as well from The Smithereens, The Fab Faux, Patti Smith, Los Lobos, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic and Cheap Trick.

The yearly fireworks show sponsored by Macy’s is always a show stopping event. This year I took up a position on a cliff above the Hudson River to shoot the festivities. The ideal location to view the fireworks in my humble opinion is Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

My location was pretty noisy from the crowd so the show is accompanied by some great independent music from Kanvas Grey, Kathy Zimmer and Marwood.

I’m very happy to release this video podcast companion to the audio soundseeing tour of Central Park from New York Minute #53.

Highlights of the video include The Lake, Bethesda Terrace, Sand Volleyball beside the Sheep Meadow, The Dairy, Victoria Gardens and The Carousel. Excellent background music is provided by James Katz and Chris Yurchuck.

The show ends with a live musical performance by The New Heathens. The performance was recently recorded at Lakeside Lounge in the East Village.

Then I take a walk up Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side, pointing out a few things about the neighborhood along the way. [Apologies in advance for the shaky camera work.] And then we finish with a musical performance by funk rocker Jason Yudoff that was filmed at Crash Mansion at 199 Bowery, which happens to be right around the corner from Sammys.
