Any tips for the best spot to watch the parade? Are there other St. Pat's - related things to do (besides drinking lots of Murphy's and Beamish)?

We're staying in the Village. Will we have any problem getting to mid-town by subway on parade morning? How early should we be there to get a decent spot?

So I've stayed away from the parade for years for fear of running into someone like me at 17.

Seriously, I'm thinking the crowd is going to be real big this year since the day falls on a Saturday. Crowds will no doubt be greatest along the hot spots of Fifth avenue, like St. Patrick's Cathedral for instance. The midtown area in general is popular because it's within walking distance of more than a few gin mills where the celebration will continue. Try heading up north on 5th avenue and you can enjoy a bit of the park. In fact, if you get to the area before 10AM you can do a little Central Park exploring prior to catching the parade.

I don't think hopping the subway will be a problem. In fact, it's probably the only way to go on the day of a big event.

Besides the parade and partying I think that the day is really about Irish heritage. There's no better place to mingle with the real deal than the Sunnyside/Woodside area of Queens. Donovan's Pub is an old favorite of mine where you can hang with NY Irish locals and have some great burgers. Take the #7 train from Grand Central to 61st St. and walk four blocks down Roosevelt Ave. to get there. Will probably be crowded in the afternoon but the adventure is half the fun.]]>
